The Church in History

The Urban Ministry center represents many things in general and two things in particular.  Firstly; it’s a product of more than thirty years of commitment, sacrifice, faith and favor. Secondly, it is a part of a continuing Christian presence in the greater Hartford area From the foundation of what was The United Pentecostal Church of God now known as Living Word Empowerment Ministries; Christians came together for the purpose of prayer and fellowship meeting in each other’s homes and wherever a place was available.  It was in the late seventies that Bishop L. Wolliston started the ministry officially in a three-car garage in Windsor Ct.  We will never forget our humble beginnings and we praise God for the work he had begun.

Over the years the church faced many obstacles, a new ministry presented numerous challenges. Being a young ministry with limited resources meant we were unable to secure a permanent place for worship, we held our services at the YWCA, schools and wherever we found an open door. After many years the Bishop returned to his true calling as a missionary and church planter. At that time His son Neville Wolliston was appointed as guardian of the church. He now serves along with his wife First Lady Wolliston as Senior Pastor.

Over the years numerous lives has been touched challenged and changed by the ministry.  As we continued; we were blest by divine guidance, to be introduced to the ministry of Evangelist Maxine Johnson who had challenged us to trust God for bigger things. At that time our services were held in a small building which became very uncomfortable in the winter months due to the lack of adequate heat. We heeded the words of the Prophetess and began looking for a permanent place of worship. God honored our faith and led us to a vacant building in the south end of the city: 510 Wethersfield Ave, where we now call home.

After much hard work and labor we were able to burn our mortgage in seven years God be praised, we are now debt free!!  The Church has grown over the years, new ministries were added which includes, a bible school, after school tutoring program, food pantry and many more. With new ministries added to the church we decided to incorporate…..The Urban Ministry Center. Some of our plans for the future include not only a new sanctuary but also a pre-school, a daycare and also a senior center.

God be praised we’ve come this far by faith. We are confident that with your help and support our goals can be realized.
